Theodore S. (Ted) Cribari, patriarch of a prominent California wine family, died Saturday after a long illness at his Fresno home. He was 74.

A third-generation winemaker, Mr. Cribari was the president of Cribari Vineyards Inc. of Fresno.

The family wine business -- B. Cribari and Sons -- was founded by Mr. Cribari's grandfather, Benjamin Cribari, in the San Jose area in 1904.

Ted Cribari was born in San Jose and graduated from Bellarmine College Preparatory High School and Santa Clara University.

He joined the family wine business immediately after graduation in 1942. The company was subsequently sold to Guild Wineries and Distilleries Inc. in the mid-fifties.

In 1966, with his son, John, Mr. Cribari established a separate company -- Cribari Vineyards Inc. -- a specialty products firm in Fresno producing sacramental wines as well as the Silver Creek Vineyard label.

A Fresno resident for 53 years, Mr. Cribari was active in philanthropic work for many groups. In 1965, he received the Benemerenti Medal from Pope Paul VI for outstanding service to the church and community.

He is survived by his wife, Phyllis, of Fresno; daughter, Suzanne Guyette of San Francisco; two sons, Ted Cribari Jr. of Los Gatos, and John Cribari of Fresno; four grandsons and a sister.

HILL Ruth Evelyn Britton, 82, died March 4, 2000, at Deaconess Hospital in Oklahoma City. She was born December 21, 1917, in Loyal, Oklahoma, to Maud Burson Britton and Russell E. Britton. She grew up in Enid, Oklahoma, and graduated from Enid High School. She graduated from Arkansas City Business College and took accounting courses at the University of Oklahoma. Following her education, she held accounting positions at Champlin Refinery and at Palacek Mills in Enid. Ruth Evelyn married ClarenceHill, her husband of 51 years, on August 17, 1946. They moved to Cherokee, Oklahoma, in 1948, where they owned and operated Hill Grain Company. After moves to Carmen and Enid, they settled in Oklahoma City in 1965, as owners of Hill's Hearing Aid Company. They retired in 1983. During the 34 years she lived in Oklahoma City, Ruth Evelyn was a member of First Christian Church. There she achieved the position of Deaconess Emeritus for her service to the Deaconess Board. Her Deaconess dutiesincluded dressing members for baptism and serving for over 20 years as advisor to junior Deaconesses. Ruth Evelyn was a member of the William Rines chapter of the Colonial Dames XVII century and served twice as state president. She was a long timemember of Chapter EW P.E.O., serving as president twice. Beloved mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, she is survived by her daughter, Lynna Geis; her granddaughter, Heather Geis Lensgraf; and her great grandson, Sam Lensgraf of Oklahoma City;andKirby Hill of Douglas, Kansas, Jere Hill of Tuscon, Arizona, and their families. Her husband, Clarence, preceded her in death. Ruth Evelyn was admired by her family and friends for her unfailing enthusiasm for life and her positive attitude. She loved to be active playing Bridge, tending her houseplants, and doing handwork. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her, and will live on in the hearts of her family and friends. Graveside services will be held Tuesday, March 7, at 1:30 p.m. atKingfisher Cemetery in Kingfisher, OK. HILL Clarence Benton, 85, died Tues., November 4, at an Oklahoma City hospital. He was born August 13, 1912, in Dover, Oklahoma, to Ethel Lock Hill and Ralph W. Hill. Clarence graduated from Enid High School and married his wife of 51 years, Ruth Evelyn Britton, on August 17, 1946. He served honorably in the U.S. Seabees in the Philippines during World War II. After the War, Clarence returned to his position as Sales Manager for Palecek Mills in Enid, Oklahoma. He continued his career in the grai n business when he purchased and operated, with his wife, Hill Grain Company, in Cherokee, Oklahoma. Following his sale of Hill Grain, he started a new career in Enid and Oklahoma City in the hearing aid business. He was owner and operator of Hills Hearing Aid, Oklahoma City, for many years and until his retirement at age 70. Clarence was a long-time member of First Christian Church, Oklahoma City, where he served as deacon and elder. He is remembered by his family and friends for his wonderful ser vice to others in both his career and church affiliations. During his careers, he received numerous honors. When in the grain business, the Cherokee FFA voted him an Honorary Chapter Farmer for outstanding service to young and prospective farmers. In 197 1-72, he was recognized for outstanding service to the Southern Division of Sonotone Hearing Aid Corporation. May, 1980, he was presented an award for dedicated service to the Oklahoma Hearing Aid Association and Life Membership to that group. He was appointed as a member to the Governor's Licensing Board for Hearing Aid Dealers in Oklahoma. After his retirement, he attended classes at Rose State College. He pursued his life-long interest in art hobbies, and became an accomplished potter and stained glass designer and craftsman. His family and many friends were blessed with gifts of his art objects for their homes. He loved to garden, and he shared his hobby with all around him. He was an avid reader, and took classes in speed reading at age 70. Clarence is survived by his wife, Ruth Evelyn; daughter, Lynna Geis, granddaughter, Heather Geis Lensgraf, husband, Jay Lensgraf, and great grandson, Sam, all of Oklahoma City; two sons, Kirby Hill and wife, Jean, of Douglass, Kans., and Jere Hill and wife, Marsha, of Tucson, Ariz.; 7 grandchildren who are out-of-state, Kim, Karen, Jeff, Krista, Stephanie, Jennifer and Mark; 18 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and one grandson. Graveside services will be held 1:30 PM Friday, Nov. 7, at Kingfisher Cemetery, Kingfisher, Ok. The family requests that memorials be made to the First Christian Church of Oklahoma City or memorial of choice. SMITH AND KERNKE
